Common Divination Tools & How to Use Them

As the nights grow longer and the veil between worlds thins, Samhain invites us to pause, reflect, and seek guidance from beyond. It is the perfect time to practise divination, whether you are calling on ancestral wisdom, seeking answers, or looking ahead to the coming year. This guide will walk you through some divination practices using accessible tools. If you have purchased our Samhain Ritual Kit this year or our new Divination Kit, this quick guide gives an overview of each of the tools included in your ritual kit.

Some common divination tools and how to use them:

Seer Stone

Divination Coin

Pendulum

Water Scrying

Mirror Scrying

Scrying with a Seer Stone

In our Divination Kit, we include an amethyst seer stone, although these steps work for any kind. We chose amethyst because it's all about spiritual insight, calm, and protection. Perfect for peering beyond the veil.

  • Ground and centre yourself. Cleanse your space if needed.
  • Set a clear question or intention before you begin.
  • Hold the stone or place it in front of you and gaze into its surface.
  • Let images, emotions, or flashes come naturally. Don’t force it.
  • Stick with it for at least 10-15 minutes - it takes time to tune in.
  • Notice what stands out, even if it seems random or weird.
  • Journal immediately after. Write first, analyse later.

Tip: Try this after grounding or meditating. It seriously boosts what comes through.

Divination Coin

This is divination in its most no-nonsense form. Yes? No? Flip and find out.

  • Take a breath and centre yourself before you begin.
  • Hold the coin between both hands and focus on a very specific question.
  • Flip once - resist the urge to re-do it until you get the answer you want.
  • Pay attention to how you felt before the coin landed. That gut pull matters.
  • Only repeat if the question shifts slightly or your energy resets.
  • Don’t rapid-fire a list of questions. One clear answer is better than ten rushed ones.

Tip: Avoid asking what you already know. The coin has zero time for self-delusion.

Using a Pendulum for Divination

We include a black obsidian pendulum in our kit - it’s grounding, protective, and brutally honest.

  • Ask the pendulum to show you what “yes” and “no” look like.
  • Start with simple warm-up questions to get in sync.
  • Keep your elbow steady and your grip loose.
  • Ask clearly - no multitasking.
  • Let it move on its own, even if it’s subtle.
  • Use a spirit board or chart for more detailed answers.
  • If it acts erratically, cleanse it and try again later, or ask something else.

Tip: Weird swings? That's your cue to ground, reset, or take a break.

Water Scrying

Hydromancy - or water scrying - is one of the oldest divination practices. It’s deeply tied to moon magic, which is why most practitioners work after dark.

  • Use a dark bowl or cauldron and fill it with water. Add a drop of ink or a dark crystal if you like.
  • Light a candle nearby - no overhead lights.
  • Sit quietly and gaze into the water’s surface.
  • Ask your question, or just stay open to whatever comes.
  • Watch for shapes, feelings, or flickers of insight.
  • Journal it all, even if it doesn’t make sense at first.
  • Night-time or quiet hours often bring clearer messages.

Tip: Call on your ancestors or spirit guides before you start for protection and clarity.

Mirror Scrying

Mirror scrying is powerful and intense - ideal for deeper insight or spirit contact.

  • Use a black mirror, a darkened regular mirror, or a dim phone screen.
  • Place one candle behind you - that’s enough light.
  • Soften your gaze and look through the mirror, not at your reflection.
  • Ask for what you want to see - be specific if you need to.
  • Watch for symbols, faces, light shifts, or flickers of movement.
  • If it gets too intense, break eye contact and ground yourself.
  • Always close the session: wipe the mirror clean, thank any spirits, and protect your space.

Tip: If you feel watched while mirror scrying, you probably are. Keep protective tools nearby, just in case.

What Comes Next: Interpreting What You See

You won’t always “get” the message right away. That’s normal. Some insights hit instantly. Others unfold slowly. Write everything down, no matter how weird or random it seems. Over time, patterns emerge. Symbols repeat. Emotions connect the dots. If something gave you chills or a gut reaction, it matters. Trust your take on it more than whatever Google says. Your intuition is the key.

Make It a Ritual: Weaving Divination Into Your Practice

These tools don’t need to stand alone. Work them into your spiritual routine. Use them to open a ritual, reset after spellwork, or close a meditation. Whether you’re flying solo or working with a coven, divination adds depth and direction. Let it evolve with your energy.

Final Thought: Trust Yourself

Your intuition is the real magic here. These tools just help you tune in. Don’t stress if things don’t make sense straight away - they will. Stay open. Keep showing up. The more you practise, the louder your inner voice gets.
