As one of Tragic's resident witches, and someone who works a lot with ritual oils, spell jars and mojo bags, I am always using essential oils. In my challenge to find high quality, pure oils, especially of plants more useful in witchcraft, I realised how hard it can be. There are a lot of oils on the market, but a ridiculous amount of them are synthetic or filled with additives. After spending so much time researching suppliers, methods of extraction, finding out how to avoid the synthetic versions, and more information about the industry, it made sense to put that knowledge to good use!
We are excited to introduce our own range of 100% pure and natural essential oils.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that capture the natural scent and beneficial properties of the source plant. These oils are typically extracted through methods such as steam distillation or cold pressing, preserving the plant's aromatic compounds and other vital elements. In simple magical terms, essential oils are basically the lifeblood essence of plants. They are powerful concentrated substances that carry many of the chemical and magical properties of the whole plant they come from, and because of their form, they are especially potent, portable, and long-lasting, which makes them perfect for magical practice. They've been used for centuries across various cultures.
Using Essential Oils in Witchcraft
In witchcraft, essential oils can be used in a huge variety of ways. From cleansing to herbal remedies to powerful ingredients in your rituals and spellwork. They are a component of candle magic in dressing your candles, added to spell bags and ritual oils and sprays, used to charge crystals and consecrate magical tools, and more.
Natural vs. Synthetic Essential Oils
Understanding the difference between natural and synthetic essential oils is crucial for anyone incorporating them into their practice. Natural essential oils are derived directly from plants and contain the full spectrum of the plant’s beneficial compounds. Synthetic oils, on the other hand, are created in laboratories and lack the complexity and therapeutic benefits of natural oils. Synthetic oils may mimic the scent of natural oils, but they do not offer the same holistic benefits and can even contain harmful chemicals.
In witchcraft, like perfume making, you want your oils to be completely pure and natural. You need the essence of the actual plant so your spell actually works. The more potent the better.
Finding pure, high-quality essential oils can be challenging. Many products labeled as "essential oils" are often diluted or mixed with synthetic additives, compromising their purity and effectiveness. There are no standards across the industry and something labelled "Therapeutic Grade" means nothing! I realised after research how many "pure" essential oils are synthetic after knowing what it actually costs to make some oils. Myrrh for example, is very expensive. If you are paying under $30 for a bottle then it is not real as it cannot be. It is a synthetic that is scented well.
