An Easy Guide to Piercing Jewellery Bar Lengths!

Let's face it, shopping for piercing jewellery can be a bit of a challenge - from trying to understand what gauge you are, to what length the piercing bar or backing needs to be, to even remembering what that piercing you have is called.  When it comes to picking the perfect size for anything piercing related, it can definitely get a little confusing - and we understand that. So, we've put together a guide to help you find your perfect piercing back.

To begin, let's run through some of the different piercing back styles that are available - internally threaded, threadless or externally threaded. No option is 'better' than the other, each suit individual needs and what feels more comfortable for you. Which piercing back you have also depends on whether the topper you'd like to put on it is threaded or threadless as well!

Internally Threaded vs Externally Threaded

Internally threaded piercing backs feature the threading on the inside of the piercing bar, while the topper to be placed inside it features a screw like back to then be screwed on to the bar internally. Externally threaded labrets are the same thing, just switched around! Externally threaded labrets feature a screw on the end of the bar, and a threaded hole in the jewellery topper to then be screwed on.

Threadless Piercing Backs

Threadless piercing backs feature no screws or threading at all and instead work on a push-pin style system. This works by the threadless piercing topper having a slim bar that slides inside the piercing back and secures by pushing in!

Now we've covered the different types - let's cover the different lengths! Before we start - the length of a piercing post is different to what the gauge is. If you're unsure of what piercing gauge you require for your piercing jewellery, visit our Guide To Piercing Gauges blog here.

6mm Piercing Backs

6mm Internally threaded piercing jewellery back

6mm is the smallest piercing length that can be worn in cartilage piercings. Before changing over to a smaller piercing back such as a 6mm or 8mm, be sure to consult with your local piercer to ensure your piercing has healed and has no inflammation. A 6mm bar is appropriate to be worn in tragus piercings, conch piercings, daith piercings and nostril.

Our range of piercing backs by Impaler Body Jewellery include both a 6mm Titanium Threadless Jewellery Back and 6mm Internally Threaded Jewellery backs in silvergold and black.

8mm Piercing Backs

8mm piercing posts are a comfortable size that fits the majority of cartilage piercings. In the same vein as when changing to a 6mm post, before downsizing make sure to check with your local piercing professional that your piercings are healed and ready for a smaller post! An 8mm piercing labret is mostly suitable for flat piercing, lobe (pierced with a needle), daith piercing, rook piercing, tragus piercing, conch piercing, rook piercing, labret and helix piercing.

Our range of piercing backs by Impaler Body Jewellery include both a 8mm Titanium Threadless Jewellery Back and 8mm Internally Threaded Jewellery backs in silvergold and black.

10mm Piercing Backs

A 10mm piercing back is worn much less than both the 8mm and 6mm and often used when initially being pierced to ensure room for swelling involved in certain areas! Any piercing changeovers that are for healing or freshly healed piercing require input from a piercing professional. We recommend a 10mm piercing back for a rook piercing or a conch piercing - we know, the list is pretty short compared to the others!

Our range of piercing backs by Impaler Body Jewellery include both a 10mm Titanium Threadless Jewellery Back and 10mm Internally Threaded Jewellery backs in silver, gold and black.
