Yule is a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, which marks the longest night of the year and therefore the return of the sun. On this day, the Northern Hemisphere's axis turns from the sun, and the distance of the sun from the equatorial plane reaches its apex. Slowly but surely, the days start to get progressively longer.
Because of this meaningful shift in seasons, the overall theme of Yule is about rebirth and renewal. Marking the seasonal passage, this festivity celebrates the gradual resurgence of daylight, represented by the twinkling of candles, flares of the bonfire, and the customary illumination of the tree. When people celebrate Yule, they reflect on the year that has passed while looking forward to the year ahead. It’s a time of year for reflection, connecting to those we love, and spending sacred time in nature.
As the outside world descends into bleak obscurity and the darkness of night pervades, Yule provides an opportunity for our interior spheres to amplify and manifest. It is a time to bring in new visions and ideas, make resolutions for the year ahead, and dream bold dreams.
